Background

I grew up in the beautiful flat land that is Norfolk. I think growing up in rural North Norfolk, surrounded by a farming community, has organically pushed my interests as a Biologist towards food production, the role farmers have as stewards and farming’s impact on nature. Anyone who has ever been to Norfolk in the middle of harvest will have seen for themselves the beauty of the golden oil seed fields mixing in with the green of the hedgerows. I am enjoying learning about how this traditional landscape could be used to both support wildlife and humans. In my spare time at home I volunteer for the Papillion charity, a charity based in teaching school children how to grow food at home sustainably.

Research interests

This year I will be studying, Carbon negative food : is it possible? This project will see me attempt to collect primary data from British vineyards to create an LCA database and understand the carbon footprint of English wines and whether certain management practises can lead to the creation of a carbon sink in the food industry. I was first attracted to this project because it aims to tackle the carbon crisis, a crisis that the food industry heavily contributes to, by using a food we all love – wine. I hope in the future to be involved in tackling policy surrounding farming, food, nature, the environment and consumer interests.
