My experience as an intern at ICCS

Joanne Forster-Martin

Background

I am an undergraduate student and incoming 4th year MBiol student interested in biodiversity offsets and biodiversity credit systems globally. Originally, I come from Devon in the south-west of England, living near to the sea and, when my degree allows, I enjoy spending time in nature looking at various plants, animals, and creatures of all kinds.

It was through an internship here at the ICCS with Joseph Bull in the summer of 2024 that I first became interested in nature markets, ultimately leading me to pursue a project here. My internship focused on creating and editing Wikipedia articles on nature positive and on biodiversity offsetting and related concepts (such as biodiversity banking), given that Wikipedia is one of the world’s most visited websites and therefore an important source of open information utilised by people of all backgrounds, potentially including those who make offsetting possible.

Research interests

I am interested in the various biodiversity offsetting systems that have emerged around the world since the 1970s, how these systems work, how effective they are, and the part they have to play in bending the curve of biodiversity loss to build a nature positive future through achieving No Net Loss.

Current research

My MBiol project will reflect my research interests, focusing on nature markets (specifically biodiversity offsets and credit markets) likely beyond the well-studied areas of North America, Australia, and western Europe.
