Migratory animals face mass extinction – but as a conservationist I’m optimistic.

Dan Challender

Background

I am an inter-disciplinary Conservation Scientist interested in wildlife trade and use, its sustainability, governance, and economics, including human behaviour, and pangolins and their conservation.

I completed my PhD on reforming the CITES Convention, at DICE, University of Kent, UK in 2014.

I subsequently worked for the IUCN Secretariat where I led the organisation’s contribution to CITES and broader illegal wildlife trade work, prior to joining the University of Oxford. In 2012, I re-formed the IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group and served as Chair of the group until early 2021.

Research Interests

My research interests broadly encompass the use and trade of wildlife, its sustainability, governance, and economics, including human behaviour, and pangolins and their conservation.

Current Research

My research forms part of the Oxford Martin School Programme on The Wildlife Trade and largely falls into research streams on (i) pangolins and (ii) wildlife trade policy.

On pangolins, my current research involves examining the feasibility of pangolin farming through the development of bioeconomic models, investigating online trade in pangolin products, and developing conversion parameters for pangolin derivatives in illegal trade.

Regarding wildlife trade policy, my research involves evaluating the extent to which social-ecological factors have been considered in CITES listing decision in the last decade and developing a theory of change to identify the conditions under which CITES trade measures would be likely to contribute to species conservation. It also involves convening disparate stakeholders to guide policy directions for high-value traded species through participatory scenario planning, with a focus on pangolins and rhinos. This research will inform proposed reforms to decision-making in CITES to ensure that decisions are underpinned by evidence.
