Hannah Nicholas
Background
Hannah previously worked as an Associate Programme Officer at the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), as part of the Nature Economy team. She assisted in the development and implementation of projects focused on improved biodiversity management by both the public and private sectors. At UNEP-WCMC, Hannah worked on a variety of projects, including: the Trade, Development and the Environment Hub; the Land Use Finance Programme, working to change the business case for action on biodiversity loss by addressing unsustainable short-term financial behaviours which incentivise the depletion of natural capital; the We Value Nature campaign, developing training modules to help businesses integrate the value of biodiversity into decision making. After this, Hannah was part of the Agile Initiative in the Oxford Martin School and Department of Biology, working on a research sprint to support the effective implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
Hannah holds a postgraduate degree in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford, and an undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Liverpool. Alongside her academic and professional interests, Hannah is also a qualified yoga teacher, and loves to spend her free time up mountains and exploring in nature.
Current Research
Hannah is the coordinator of the Conservation and Sustainability Consortium of AcaDEmic Institutions (CASCADE). CASCADE brings together higher education institutions from across the UK working on finding sustainable and socially just solutions to the biodiversity crisis. CASCADE uses the UK higher education sector’s expertise and networks in cross-disciplinary conservation science to support the development of principles, policies and practices that meet the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) in an equitable, inclusive way that respects and protects human rights.
