Being from Dorset, I have long appreciated the beauty of my local area and the nature it is home to. Particular species come to mind when I think about growing up there, such as the Lulworth Skipper, whose name comes from the local town it was first discovered in, the Slow Worm, which I used to be thrilled to find in my garden or local heathland, and the Red Squirrels of Brownsea Island, where I used to go in summer with my family. Programmes such as Planet Earth and Deadly 60 taught me about species found further afield, sparking a keen interest in nature and the plight of conserving it in the wake of anthropogenic change. My goal now is to contribute towards raising awareness about the biodiversity and climate crises, improving science communication with the public to rebuild our connection with wildlife and promote a more sustainable relationship with nature.
