I joined ICCS and Conservation Optimism in January 2019. My role focuses on outreach and communications and involves the organisation of the next Conservation Optimism Summit coming in September 2019. I’ve had the opportunity to study in various countries during my master’s degree and speak fluent French, English and Portuguese as a result. I’m also a multimedia journalist with a passion for constructive journalism and solutions-oriented reporting who loves showcasing what people from all over the globe are doing to make the world a better place.
A passion for wildlife and conservation led Julia to study for a B.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Rennes in France. She then moved on to an International Master in Applied Ecology and completed her thesis estimating the abundance and distribution of sea turtles in South Brazil.
After graduating, she realised that what she really wanted to do was to write about environmental issues so she decided to specialise in science communication and gained an M.A in International Journalism from Cardiff University. As part of her degree she wrote a series of features looking at the importance of involving local communities in conservation projects in East Africa and was published in Africa Geographic.
Julia is a strong advocate of constructive journalism and believes that solutions-oriented reporting is crucial to show that the news cycle doesn’t have to be all about doom and gloom. To this end, she co-founded an international media platform called INKLINE (www.the-inkline.com) which features positive news, interviews with go-getters championing sociocultural causes, stories of people living their purposes and chasing passions amid adversities, and various sources of inspiration.
After almost two years working as the Science & Conservation Communications Officer at Chester Zoo, she has embarked on a new adventure by joining the ICCS team and becoming the Conservation Optimism Outreach Coordinator. She will use her skills to share optimistic stories about conservation to inspire, educate, entertain and empower people all over the world.
